The Oleg Mityaev Studio “Bright Future”

Chelyabinsk city, Russia

A Joint project of Oleg Mityaev Charity Fund and International Fund “Bright Future”

I Give My Heart to the Children

On February 14 and 15 the Palace of Young Pioneers and Students hosted a city round of the National Professional Contest for Teachers of Extra-Curricular Education called “I Give My Heart to the Children”. 54 teachers from Chelyabinsk participated in the event, and the judge panel consisted of recognized experts of all kinds: practicing teachers, educators, heads of schools and education centers, representatives of the Chelyabinsk City Congress and the Public Chamber of Chelyabinsk Region.

The Vocals group of the Bright Future Studio had the honor of participating in the opening ceremony of the event. Our children and teachers sang the song “Korablik – The Little Boat” written by the Studio’s teacher and concertmaster Svetlana Solodova and wished all the best to the contestants.

  • Polina: This time I was more worried than usual – we realized that a contest is a very important thing and that there are many famous teachers in the audience, who work with children. We were afraid to let our own teachers down.
  • Sasha: I wasn’t shy, on the opposite, I was trying really hard.
  • Anfisa: We are not used to participating in concerts yet, that is why it’s hard for us to concentrate, and we are more nervous than we should be. We need to learn to prepare ourselves for performing and remember that there are no unimportant performances. We always sing for people.

  • At Terpsikhore's Again

On February 12th the students of the Performing Arts group of the Studio watched the next of the "At the Terpsikhores"s" concert (see news from October 8th and January 15th). At the Palace of Young Pioneers and Students the children learned about different folk dances: Russian, Byelorussian, Bashkir, Georgian, Chinese and many others.

This time the dancers were not only from Chelyabinsk, but also from the surrounding cities (Yuzhnouralsk, Korkino, and Argayash). At the end of the concert the Studio children were able to have a chat and take a group photo with the dancers from the renowned Chelyabinsk Dance Troupe called "Barabushki".

  • Ilya: How do they manage to control their bodies? It seems that the movements are easy, but I realize that it is very difficult to do them right.
  • Vika: I really loved the Chinese dance with a dragon. The costumes were beautiful!
  • Shakrom: I liked the sailors' dance the most. Thank you to all the participants for such a great show!

  • Hip-Hop Lessons

On February 5th both Studio groups – Vocalists and the Performing Arts group, took turns warming up in the middle of our cold Russian winter by having “hip-hop” classes with choreographer Ludmila Boltova.

The kids learned about different movements of this American street dance style, for example, “touch”, “criss-cross", and “Robocop”, and learned how to do them. The children and teens did their best to to move with the music, creating a wave of smiles. By the end of their first class they could do 16 tacts of a hip-hop dance routine and they were very excited.

  • Alina (Performing Arts Group): I really liked to dance. Even though I fall behind the rhythm a little bit, but I really want to learn more.
  • Yulia (Performing Arts Group): It was great! It was hard to do movements faster and faster, but I almost got it down.
  • Dasha (Vocals Group): So many new movements! I didn’t know that our bodies can move like that.
  • Angela (Vocals Group): I really like the teacher. She was kind and caring.
  • Polina: (Vocals Group): It reminded me of our camp where we were also learning to dance hip-hop. I can’t wait for the summer to come!

  • At Terpsikhore's

On January 15th the Studio went to watch another one of the dancing shows called "At Terpsikhore"s". This time the performers demonstrated different kinds of modern dance. To remind you, that monthly concerts of the Terpsikhore"s Club have been organized by the Choreography Faculty of the Chelyabinsk State Academy of Arts for 21 years in a row. Participants of the show are the students of the Academy as well as children who study dancing in different clubs all over the region.

The January concert presented contemporary dancing styles: modern, folk-modern, pop and jazz.

  • Nastya: I liked the Little Red Riding Hood dance most of all – it was very unusual. I expected ballet or folk dance, but it was a whole show in jazz style.
  • Polina: I noticed that the dancers were all nervous in the beginning of their dances, but then the nervousness was gone and they did their best. It happens to us too, when we perform.
  • Davlat: I didn’t think that dancing could be so exciting!
  • Anfisa: A few times I felt like jumping up from my chair and dancing together with the children on stage!

  • Participation in ceremony of "Bright Past Award"

The students of the Music and Vocals group of the Studio have participated in their first really big concert – the "Bright Past Award" ceremony which took place in the Naum Orlov Drama Theatre in Chelyabinsk on January 22nd.

The song called "Korablik – My Little Boat" written by the Studio pianist Svetlana Solodova and sung by our students, echoed Oleg Mityaev’s famous song: «Our steamboat is travelling to our bright past...»

The children were all very anxious, because they realized that singing in the concert was a great honor, but they all managed to control their emotions as real performers can.

  • Alyosha: First I was afraid, but after we sang I was euphoric!
  • Alyona: We did it! So much work – but all for a good cause!
  • Sonya: Everything went by too fast, we were just getting started!
  • Lera: We practiced from lunchtime till dinner – but we never got tired!
  • Seryoja: As soon as I came out on stage and saw how full the audience was, and how high the ceiling – I was so afraid. But I was still smiling, as I have been taught.
  • Polina: So many people were taking pictures of us – and I felt even more responsible because of that!
  • And when we asked the children to grade their performance this is what they said:

  • Alyona: «A minus». We didn’t get off stage altogether.
  • Êðèñòèíà: «B plus». I think we were too quiet.
  • Nikita: We didn’t roll our “r’s” as we were supposed to. “A minus”.
  • Nikita Â: We were too stiff, we should have been more relaxed. I wouldn’t give us an “A”. We need to work harder!
  • The rehearsal in the theatre before the ceremony:

    Performing Arts Group
In November and December 2011 the Studio conducted auditions for the new group that will be studying Performing Arts.

The program for the new group includes:

    1. Humanitarian education:

  • Getting to know different types of art forms while visiting theatres, museums etc.;
  • Interaction with people representing the cultural elite of the modern society, workshops with the National Artist of Russia Oleg Mityaev and others;
  • Performing at festivals and competitions;
  • Participating in charity events – concerts in social institutions, hospitals etc.
  • 2. Education in Performing Arts:

  • Acting
  • Movement on stage
  • Speaking on stage
  • The basics of filming and photography
  • 3. Education in the field of communication:

  • English language
  • Ethics and Manners classes
  • Speech development
  • It was decided to select the children for the new group from middle school, 5th-7th grade, because at this age they are already aware of their motivation to study Performing arts. Most of the children were chosen from school #68 in the Leninsky district of Chelyabinsk, as well as from the Boarding school #4 for physically challenged children. The Studio children already made friends with the students of this boarding school when they went there with their year-end concert (see news from December 12th). Most students live and study at the boarding school and it"s rather difficult for them to go anywhere to get additional education and develop their talents, but according to the teachers and directors of the school, that is exactly what they need – to socialize with healthy children in a regular environment, an in our case – with children who are experiencing difficulties in life that are different from theirs. This is how they all can develop compassion, learn to give a helping hand and encourage others.

The Studio teachers conducted interviews with the potential candidates in the above-mentioned schools, as well as in the schools where the Vocals group children study as we already have good relations with the administration. Besides, there were a few of their middle school students in difficult situations who couldn’t afford extra-curricular studies. After the auditioning, the parents and foster parents of the candidates were invited to a PT (parents and teachers meeting) meeting at the Palace of Young Pioneers and Students.

At the PT meeting there were a few speakers: the Studio Director Anna Mara, the Vice-Director of the Palace of Young Pioneers and Students and the Head of the Chelyabinsk Center for working with talented children, Irina Rozhdestvenskaya, as well as the teachers of the new group – Elena Baskakova and Natalia Volokitina. The parents were shown the report on the results of the Studio from the first year and received an explanation on the mission and goals of the project, the program, and the conditions for enlisting their children.

The parents and guardians turned in the necessary paperwork and had interviews with the Studio director. As a result, 50 children and young teenagers ages 12-15 were enlisted in the new group. Classes for the Acting and Filming group started on January 17th, right after winter school break.

    Anna Mara, Studio director:

We definitely see that the new children present quite a challenge being older than the kids in our first group and coming from different backgrounds, some of them quite tough, but at the same time we see a lot of talent in this group. They are all sincere in their desire to start the studies and that in turn inspires us teachers very much.

The teachers of the Performing Arts Group::
Elena L. Baskakova – acting, movement on stage, speaking on stage (resume in Russian),

Jesse Mara – English Language (resume in Russian),

Natalia I. Volokitina – The basics of filming and photography (resume in Russian).

The Ethics and Speech Development course will be conducted by the Studio director Anna Mara, who has been teaching the Music Arts Group. (resume in English).

    A Visit to Planetarium
On January 29ththe Studio submerged into an amazing world of planets, starts and nebula. In the Planetarium of the Local History Museum the students of both the Vocals and the Performing Arts groups learned the mystery of black holes and made a journey through time and space all the way to the edge of the Milky way.

They explored different astral bodies and even though it turned out that not every planet can sustain life, the hope that life exists on other planets is an exciting possibility.

  • Vadim (Performing Arts Group): I really loved it in the Planetarium. I learned many new things. It turns out that the scientists created a capsule with the microorganisms that they want to send to other planets!
  • Slava (Vocals Group): I learned a lot about black holes and now I know that they can suck up a whole star, even though they themselves are only pea-size!
  • Davlat (Vocals Group): It turns out that there are stars that are bigger then our sun!
  • Stas (Vocals Group): I liked “flying” to different planets, and “inhabiting” them with living things: animals, plants, and people. It feels great when you can give life!

  • Meeting with Press Photographer E. Tkachenko
On January 26th the Performing Arts group of the Studio met with a distinguished press photographer of the ITAR-TASS Agency in the Chelyabinsk Region Evgeniy I.Tkachenko. The meeting took place in the Information Center of the Atomic Industry of Chelyabinsk. Mr. Tkachenko told everyone how he started his career in 1959 in the newspaper called "Chelyabinskiy Rabochiy" (The Worker of Chelyabinsk). He said that as a child he really loved Maths, but his love for photography made him into a reporter.

The teenagers were eager to ask Mr. Tkachenko many questions. They wanted to know a lot of things: does he have to give up his personal time for the sake of his profession, how the quality of pictures differs from the ones that were taken many years ago, when he took his first good photo and even if he had any pets.

  • Vadim: I learned that Evgeniy Ivanovich took his first good photo when he was 20 years old.
  • Zhenya: It was very exciting to talk to a real press photographer!
  • Katya: I never knew that a press photographer’s life can be so interesting and exciting.

  • Acquaintence with Performing Arts Group
On January 22nd, both Studio groups - the choir and the new Performing Arts group met together for the first time.

The old-timers sang a song about friendship called “Walking Talking” together with Jesse and Anna, and then we played team-building games. In order to get better acquainted they played a game where they formed groups on stage by their eye-color, age, month of birth and so on, and then created a collective image of a new Studio Kid. After that each child made a wish and "put" it in an origami figure in a shape of a heart. All the hearts were put together into letter saying "Ya Mechtayu" (I dare to dream).

  • Semyon (Performing Arts Group): It was great! I wanted to make not just one, but many hearts and take them all home.
  • Diana (Performing Arts Group): I really love coming here to the Studio; especially it"s great on Sundays when everyone gets together!
  • Anya (Performing Arts Group): Even though I couldn’t make the hearts myself, I was so happy, because one girl came up to me and started helping. It doesn’t happen too often when someone comes and offers help, but in the Studio it’s like that. I also remember how we were gluing the words together, because the atmosphere was so warm and special.

    A Seminar by Sergey Tetyersky
On January 14th within the frame of the International Association “Let’s Give Children All We’ve Got!” in the Palace of Young Pioneers and Students was holda meeting with an outstanding Teacher – Sergey Tetyersky, who is the Head of the Children’s and Young People’ Social Initiatives organization, a Professor of the Moscow Humanitarian State University, and a EdD. The Students and their parents participated in the seminar that was called “Have A Look into Your Future”.

Everyone had a chance to feel a breeze of the future, project their lives all the way to 2020, and realize who and what are the motivating and de-motivating factors in their lives.

  • Nikita: I made a plan for my future. Now I know that I have to hurry in order to fulfill my plan.
  • Violetta: I liked the video about the future of our country. But I was a little scared that we might have wars in the future. We have to do something to make sure that it won’t happen.
  • Sasha: I was so surprised that I am my own motivator. I thought it was somebody else. But now I have to make myself work very hard in order for my dreams to come true.

  • Musical "Star Child"
On December 25th the Studio children celebrated Christmas by going to a Christmas play-musical created by “The Palace of Young Pioneers and Students” based on the play “Star Child” by Oscar Wilde. The script and the music for the play were written by the Chelyabinsk authors: Konstantin Rubinsky and Marina Bushmeleva consecutively, and the performers were children that study different courses of the Palace.

Our students were very attentive because they had already received performing experience and were imagining themselves in place of the actors and singers.

The book itself which we had read at our Ethics and Esthetics class a month prior to the performance, has now found color, shape, and sound. But the idea that Oscar Wilde was trying to convey to his young readers, has remained the same:

  • Artyom: Whatever we look like, however handsome or smart we might consider ourselves to be, we have to treat others with love and not hurt those who seems worse than we are.
  • Alyona: The story teaches us to respect each other just the way we are, to get to know the inner world of another person, and to bring love, but not hate.

  • Children who have been chosen for our new group of the Studio "Theatre and Cinema" and who haven"t started their classes in the Studio yet, were also invited to watch the performance and together with the "old-timers” enjoy the celebration, get to know the Palace and receive Christmas gifts. This outing has become the start of a new friendship.

    Report Concert
The first year-end concert of Studio Oleg Mityaev took place on December 18th, 2011, in Assembly Hall of the “Palace of Young Pioneers and Students n.a. N.K.Krupskaya.”

The children’s relatives, classmates and school teachers were present, as well as other people who are concerned for the Studio"s progress and who participate or are planning to participate in our projects. The concert was dedicated to Christmas and the New Year. It contained 9 songs, out of which one was sung “a capella,” the other had two-voice texture and one was accompanied by a few instruments (note-bells, xylophones and percussion). Many of the songs were written by local Chelyabinsk authors, among which is our Studio teacher and pianist Svetlana Solodova.

According to the script, the students of Studio were to set free sleeping elfs who are under the spell of the wizard by carrying out musical tasks – perform songs. The tasks were carried out excellent, elfs awoke and went to help Santa Clause deliver presents.

Pedagogues presented the diploma to the children and souvenirs from sponsors and books.

The next day the children drew and wrote what they were feeling on a large piece of paper.

A Charity Concert in Boarding School #4
On December 12th the Studio children set off to give a charity concert at the Chelyabinsk Boarding School #4. This institution is set up for physically disabled children who suffer from malfunctions of motor skills and central nervous system.

Both the performers and audience were anxious, the performers because it was their first real concert, and the audience because it is so rare that other children come to their school to perform. The show went very well, the audience clapped and sang along, and the call to "Dream Together!" was repeated in unison by both the Studio children and the boarding school students.

Our children also passed on a little Christmas gift of sweets to the children they were visiting. The sweets had been sent by the students of the Ozyorsk Lyceum #39 who weren"t able to attend the show, but decided to participate in the charity event by donating treats.

  • Nikita: I felt happy, I felt joy and love. And I was very nervous, more nervous than when we sang before our parents at the year-end concert.
  • Violetta: It was very scary for us. So we just started to sing from our hearts.
  • Polina: I had some fear at first, but when I saw the faces of the children from the Boarding school, I felt better right away.
  • Doston: I felt like they were already our friends.
  • Stas: The faces of the audience were so surprised, because it was very special for them.
  • Alyona: I didn’t have any fear. We had been waiting for so long! And when we were performing I started feeling so sorry for the children and I felt like crying. But I didn’t cry, I just wanted to bring them joy so they can be happy like us, despite their problems.
  • Telecast was made about this Charity Concert within the bound of plots "Lets Give Children All We"ve Got!"

    Rehearsals
In November and the first half of December the Studio kids have been actively preparing for two shows that will take place on the 12th and the 18th of December. The first concert is a charity performance for the children of Boarding School #4 who have serious health problems (motor skills and central nervous system malfunctions). And the other show is a year-end concert for the children’s parents, teachers and friends at the Palace of Young Pioneers where we base out of.

The children have been working very hard practicing, because they understand that they are in a position to give joy to those who are in worse circumstances than they are, and that is a great motivator.

On the 2nd of October, 2011 in the Concert hall “Russia” in Luzhniki will take place a charitable concert "Let’s give children all we’ve got!" Raised funds of that concert will go to clinic of doctor Leonid M. Roshal for purchasing of the medical equipment. Creative and financial report (download .pdf file).
Lecture-concert "The Voices of the Choir"
The students continue to participate in the “Sunday Philharmonic Program” (see Report of October 16). On November, 13 pupils and teachers visited lecture-concert "The Voices of the Choir".

The Chelyabinsk Kamerny Choir under direction of Valeri Mikhalchenko impressed the audience with beautiful harmonies and emotion. The emcee of the concert, the Laureate of International Competitions and a pianist Natalia Gushina not only gave a lecture about the various voices of the choir, but also encouraged the students to participate in a conversation and asked and answered questions. The show lasted for over an hour, and the students with enthusiasm were singing along and applauding the artists.

  • Nikita: I remember from the concert that you can sing solo, in a duet, a trio or a quartet.
  • Timur: It’s easier to hit high notes when you use your cheeks, that’s what Tatyana Alexandrovna teaches us. And I noticed that the singers in the choir did the same.
  • Masha: I really liked when the choir was divided into two parts and one part echoed the other.

  • In January 2012 Studio "Bright future" opens in Chicago. It will start with the gala concert with American and Russian stars. Here is the greeting to Chicago's project from Chelyabinsk studio.
    The Play of Zoopark theatre
On November 6th the kids got a great opportunity to see a play called "Klakson and Lastik. One Crazy Day." by Nizhniy Novgorod Theater of Simultaneous Play "Zoopark".

The show was Actors Oleg Shapkov and Lev Kharlamov grap the audience for more than hour. As the play creators said, "the two clowns don’t really mentor anybody, they are getting to know the world while discovering some good moral principles, because it"s the process and the child"s participation that matter, and not stuffing certain rules into a child"s head. The main goal of the project is to show a child different situations that come up while people (children) communicate, and meanwhile direct them to certain moral conclusions".

There were a lot of songs in the show and kids counted eight of them. They instantly learnt the poems about animals and even taught them to their classmates, brothers, and sisters.

  • Angelina: I liked that they told us about so many animals – I counted 16!
  • Kristina: Among of all the songs I liked the one about night, because sometimes I also can’t fall asleep easily.
  • Nikita D: I liked their jokes about sweets and how they harm our teeth. And then they also sang a song about how to brush teeth in right way, I learn the chorus very easily!
  • Nikita B: Lastik and Klakson showed us that even if friends argue it doesn’t mean that they don’t love each other. You can always make up and go on being friends!

  • Galileo Park
On October 30th the “Galileo” Interactive Intertainment Park welcomed the excited Studio kids – they"d been waiting for this day for a long time. Two large halls with tricks, experiments and games, as well as the mirror labyrinth, off-center gravity rooms, rotating map of the starry sky – that is not all that kids have seen.

Their developed vocal chords assisted them to outroar a sound of an airplane, their teamworking skills helped not to get lost in labyrinths, and their childish immediacy – to laugh till they dropped on optical illusion tricks.

  • Ilya: I loved the Mirror Labyrinth. When it seemed that I could never make it out alone – I met other kids and together we found a way out.
  • Dima: I went through the rotating sky tunnel many times. Eventually, I just lay on the floor and the stars rotated right over my head!
  • Stas: I liked the illusions of height. We seemed either very short or very tall!
  • Nikita: I was amazed with the Einstein's Mask. It seemed to look like a real head from any angle, but it was only a mask!
  • Danil: It was very difficult to get through the labyrinths, we had to think and remember. But I learned quickly and then became a guide for other kids!

  • Organ
On October 16th the Studio went to a concert called "Introduction to the key-instruments" that took place in the Chelyabinsk Organ Hall as part of the "Sunday Philharmonic Program" organized by the Chelyabinsk Concert Association. The children who had already known the functioning of a piano and a grand-piano got a chance to learn how an organ and a harpsichord are made.

Famous Chelyabinsk organist Larissa Tymshina performed various classical organ pieces for the kids among which were the "Westminster Bells” by Louis Vierne and the Choral Prelude "Come now, Savior of the Heathen” by Johann Sebastian Bach.

The kids were listening very carefully for a master of ceremony, actively participated in the question-and-answer game, and some of them even got a chance to go up on stage and try playing the piano.

  • Nastya: I answered the master’s of ceremony question and got called up to play the grand-piano on stage – it’s a good thing that I had already known the piano keys!
  • Angela: I had heard a lot of the pieces before, but I didn’t know that it was the sound of organ.
  • Nikita: I’ve never suspected that the organists use their feet to play! The whole plays!

  • A lecture-concert "At Terpsikhore's"
On October 8th the Studio’s kids went to a lecture-concert on different kinds of classical and modern dance called "At Terpsikhore"s". This series of concerts have been organized by the choreography Faculty of the Chelyabinsk States Culture and Arts Academy for 21 years, and has been directed by a professor of this Faculty Tamara B. Narskaya, who bears the title: Recognized Culture Specialist of the Russian Federation, and also is a Laureate of the Chelyabinsk Regional Senate Prize.

The students were in awe as they watched their peers and children a little older dance classical ballet, folk, modern and acrobatic dances.

  • Alyona: I liked the troupe "Perezvoni" (Bell Rings) the best. Their folk dances looked modern.
  • Sonya: I loved the modern dance called "In Search of Fire" done by the dance troupe called "The Orange".
  • Gera: The troupe called “Fantasia” interested me the most, especially their dance with giant blocks which they used to put together different words during the dance. The words were: Mother, Father, Children, Sun, and Peace, and the phrase: We are Building the Future.
  • Kristina and Nastya: We just loved the performance done by the Theatre of Classical Ballet!
  • Dasha and Dima: The funniest was the dance of the Caterpillar: we noticed that it had all sorts of dances in it: ballet, folks dance and even modern dance.
  • Lyosha: I counted three different folk dances in the program: Russian, Cossack, and Bashkir.

  • Operating report about the time spent at musically-liguistic camp "Rainbow", where students combined outdoor activities and studies.

A Tour the the City Zoo
On September 18th the students went on a tour of the city zoo. The children learned about the animals’ routines, their schedules and feeding hours, and even their amusing habits.

They visited the petting zoo, where they were able to pet rabbits, be chased by the geese and admire a big family of guinea pigs. For most, it was their first chance to do something like that, and their excitement was contagious and affected all of the other visitors in the zoo.

Jesse: I asked Artyom when was the last time he had been to the zoo, he said: “Never. I came once with my grandmother and we thought it was free, but when we realized we had to pay we didn’t go in.” He was fascinated. All the kids want to visit the zoo again.

  • Angela: I loved the monkey most!
  • Anfisa: I liked the spider monkeys.
  • Sasha: It was wonderful to pet the rabbit. Jesse taught us how to do it right.
  • Polina: I loved the colorful rooster – we thought that someone had painted it, silly us! But then we realized that he was just born like that.
  • Liza: My favorite animal was the parrot with the golden crown. Beautiful and funny.

  • An excursion around the hometown
On September 11th the children met altogether again after the camp and went on a bus excursion around the city.

The Victory Garden, the Ice Palace "Ural Lightning", the South Ural State University, the Opera House and the walking street Kirovka – those are the places they’ve visited.
